COMMUNIST INSURGENT ACTIVITY

The above newspaper clipping taken from a "Stars & Stripes" newspaper in 1973 shows that Thai Airbases were not  safe from insurgent activities...These occurred throughout my tour at Udorn, but sorry to say that I only saved one of these articles, and probably missed most of them...

Historical records indicate that Thai airbases far from the border were subject to this type of harassment, not to mention bases located on or near the border of Laos. Many such events occurred without even so much as the proper documentation, or record keeping, so be it as it may, there are many accounts of aggression that went unnoticed by the American GI's stationed at these various Thai Airbases.

Keep in mind that these are my personal thoughts after reflecting on them almost 30 years later. Little did most of us know at the time, that all around us, and on the borders that these skirmishes were taking place. Me, as a crew chief, little was said by our superiors that we must keep on our guard while off duty, and downtown, where these so-called "white collar" communist hung out... While doing some research on the subject recently, I came across some basic information relating as to the reason for these attacks, and acts of aggression.

Throughout the VN War Thai Air bases played a very important part in air operations in SEA...We covered all fields of operations in Vietnam, Laos, and into the 70's even in Cambodia. We supplied air support for US ground forces, as well as missions which covered areas of the infamous "Ho Chi Minh Trail"... Rescue operations of downed airmen were also carried out by our "Jolly Green" troops stationed at Udorn RTAFB, and other Thai airbases. So, needless to say, we were a huge thorn in the side of the North Vietnamese, and Pathet Lao, which would make these airbases in the rear prone to attack, and harassment by these insurgents...

And so it was, so many years ago in a war far away...We worked hard, played hard, and lived life reckless and to the full...Not knowing what the next day would bring....

I will be adding more info and data on this subject in the near future, and links relating to "Communist Aggression in Southeast Asia"...And would be interested in the personal accounts of anyone visiting my site.
